Cambodia is home to one of humankind's most magnificent architectural achievements - the temples of Angkor. Situated in the tropical forests of Siem Reap, Angkor is a living testament to the scope and grandeur of the Khmer Empire. This ancient capital of the powerful Khmer Empire from the 9th - 12th centuries is home to one of the world's archaeological gems and remains the spiritual and cultural center of Cambodia. The Angkor Archaeological Park consists of 70 ruins in an area of 200 square km and is home to some of the most important structures, statues and carvings produced in the name of the Buddhist and Hindu religions. While Angkor offers a glimpse into Cambodia's rich historical past, the capital city Phnom Penh is an example of modern day Cambodia with its eclectic mix of architecture including French colonial buildings, royal palaces, Chinese shophouses, and modern high-rises. |
